Weather Proofing
RhoadiesPorch ViewCutting Insulation

The basement concrete walls were sprayed with a sticky weatherproofing material, and then 8′ rolls of material designed to drain any remaining water down and away from the house were tacked up. I glued and taped insulation to the other two foundation walls. We should be backfilled within the next day or two, and then the plumbers can start their groundwork. Framing is expected to start next Monday.

Forms were stripped on Friday. Changes will be less obvious for a few days, as the concrete walls are waterproofed and draintile is put down. Then the dirtpile situation will be changed as the dirt is backfilled to the foundation/walls.

The next big step is the start of framing, where the changes will be fast and furious.

Foundation Pour

My lovely wife was awoke this morning at 6:30 with the sound of an approaching pump truck. By shortly after 7, they were pumping concrecte, and by 8:30 most of the walls, foundations, and deck footings were poured. They are expecting to strip forms tomorrow, and begin backfilling next week. We are close to the start of framing!!!!

Inspectors

May 17, 2008

Okay – the little goose families really aren’t inspectors, but when they have the goslings, the parents sure do watch carefully.

Simon and Katrina came over for the first time in about week and are surprised at the progress!

The first picture shows how the rebar and the panels fit together to prepare the wall to be poured (if there are any smart people out there that know how to rotate pictures, please let me know).

The second picture gives you an idea of the relative height from the main floor of the house.

The third picture shows one of the corner walls, and how the rebar is tied together to give strength at the corners.

They expect to finish forming the walls Monday, and I would guess they will pour the foundation and walls Tuesday/Wednesday.

Well we passed inspection, and they poured the first concrete.

Probably Friday they will frame the forms for the basement walls (~8 ft tall).

Green Monster
I came home yesterday to a “preconstruction” meeting with the foundation crew and found they had been working for a couple of hours and had a good start. After adjusting the prow point back out 2.5 feet, they finished framing, and are awaiting inspection at midday today before pouring concrete. After a long wait, things are starting to move!!!!!

On the other side of our house, we have had a Green Monster. That lot now has a demolition (of the mobile home) and a building permit for a nice new house. They are building up towards the road, so we will gain a little nicer view of the lake from the old house. The men in the picture are working on asbestos abatement.

First Bites
After 5.5 months of jumping through hoops, we wrote a big check and received our building permit on May 2nd.  It took a couple of tries, but we successfully avoided having to install a sprinkler system.  On May 9th, we had a preconstruction meeting onsite with a building inspector, and later that afternoon, the excavator invited me to take the first bite with his monster machine.  A little intimidating to be sure, but we got a couple big scoops in.  The initial excavation work was finished May 10th, and we are awaiting a foundation framing crew early next week.
